Rocky View County

The Bow River runs right through Cochrane, one of the vibrant towns that make Rocky View County so special.

Welcome to the wide-open heart of southern Alberta. Rocky View County was established in 1955 and named for its sweeping views of the Rockies—views that still stop people in their tracks today. Alberta’s most populous rural municipality, it stretches across a vast mosaic of prairie, foothills, towns, and farmland, wrapping Calgary in a scenic, ever-changing landscape.

ROCKY VIEW COUNTY SAYS HELLO!

Rocky View County’s story starts alongside Alberta’s own. In 1882, the region was still a part of the North-West Territories and only became a province in 1905. As settlers moved outward from Calgary, the Rural Municipality Act of 1912 gave rural areas the power to govern themselves, build roads, and manage taxes.

By the 1950s, overlapping school and municipal boundaries prompted change. The province merged several municipalities in 1955 and formed the Municipal District of Calgary No. 44—but the name didn’t stick. A public naming contest later that year yielded the winner: “Rocky View,” a nod to the county’s mountain vistas.

Today, Rocky View County spans more than 3,800 square kilometres and nearly encircles Calgary—north, west, and east—forming a scenic boundary between city momentum and country calm. Over 40,000 residents live in its 15+ communities, from the forested quiet of Bragg Creek to Chestermere’s lake life, Airdrie’s urban edge to Langdon’s small town soul.

Did you know? Rocky View County is home to 26 named peaks, with Wildcat Hills standing as the tallest at 5,105 feet.
